NISSAN SPORT QUICK TAKE

The much-anticipated debut of the Infiniti FX50/35 has put my EX purchasing plans into a state of confusion. Damn you, Infiniti! Infiniti wisely didn't play much with the looks of the next-gen FX. The headlights are the biggest change, picking up cues from the G35/37 and EX35. Some FX owners aren't crazy about them, but it's two thumbs up from this editor. Obviously, you gotta love the new 5.0-liter V8 and the nearly 400 hp, but I wonder how well it will sell as gas continues its march to $4 gallon. That said, the 7-speed auto is a huge uptick and we applaud Infiniti for adding the extra gears. We expected the FX to match the stellar interior of the EX and it does at first glance. Of questionable benefit is all the extra technology on the crossover. Don't get me wrong, I love techy stuff, but the world's first Distance Control Assist, "which helps reduce the stress of driving in heavy traffic by intuitively helping to release the throttle and apply the brakes to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead" sounds a bit big brother. But I'll be honest and say if it works as advertised, that'll be technology I'll order with my FX35. I'm digging the brakes, digging the wheels, and digging this crossover. A full review of the new 2009 Infiniti FX50 and the 2009 Infiniti FX35 is in the Spring 2008 issue of Nissan Sport. [Infiniti Press Release: March 4, 2008]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 4, 2008) – Infiniti today revealed the all-new 2009 Infiniti FX performance luxury crossover in conjunction with the Geneva Motor Show.  The second-generation FX, with its fusion of sports car and SUV design, will be offered in three models, including a new 5.0-liter V8-equipped Infiniti FX50.  The 2009 FX is scheduled to go on sale at Infiniti dealers in the United States and Canada in June 2008.

The new FX’s world debut in Geneva was hosted by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO Carlos Ghosn, who also announced details of Infiniti’s plans to enter the Western European market in the last quarter of 2008.

About the 2009 Infiniti FX
The all-new second-generation Infiniti FX is designed to offer exceptional levels of power, refinement, safety and driving exhilaration.  Created as a fusion of sports car and SUV utility, with head-turning styling and an advanced sports sedan platform, the new FX is a showcase of Infiniti’s design and technology leadership.

Along with its dramatic, aerodynamic body structure and sporty FM (Front Midship) platform, the new FX features a extensive list of available equipment and technology designed to create an exciting and rewarding driving experience – including a new 390-horsepower 5.0-liter 32-valve DOHC V8 or advanced V6 engine (V6 details to be released later), 7-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Control and available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive.

The new Infiniti FX also offers a wide range of available safety technologies, including:
· Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA), which provides forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking
· Lane Departure Warning/Lane Departure Prevention system, which help keep the vehicle in its travel lane
· Intelligent Cruise Control (Full Speed Range), maintains a pre-set distance with the vehicle ahead at speeds between 0-90 mph
· And the industry’s first application of Distance Control Assist (DCA), which helps reduce the stress of driving in heavy traffic by intuitively helping to release the throttle and apply the brakes to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead

The 2009 Infiniti FX’s trademark performance characteristics are enhanced with a refined 4-wheel independent suspension and large 4-wheel disc brakes with available opposed-piston brake calipers.  A new, available FX Sport Package includes a Continuous Damping Control (CDC) suspension, Rear-Active Steer and 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

Inside, the new FX interior provides a warm, modern, inviting environment highlighted by a driver-oriented cockpit with available sport seating and advanced audio, navigation and entertainment systems – including an 11-speaker Boseâ audio system, Infiniti Intelligent Key and Around View Monitor system.
