Out of the Shadows: Number 13 Takes its Place in History
October 18, 1969 was a sunny day in Kanagawa, Japan. Selected members of the automotive press gathered on the grounds of Nissan’s Hiratsuka assembly plant. Such a buzz had been brewing about a new sports car to be officially unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show later that week, that Nissan decided to give reporters a sneak peak. As they watched, two assistants slowly rolled back the cover to reveal a stunning blue 240Z, the first of its kind. Or was it? Somewhere in the warehouse, away from photographers’ flash bulbs and reporters’ questions, another 240Z, a gold one, quietly waited to be loaded on a ship bound for America. A few weeks later, it unassumingly rolled ashore in the eastern United States and disappeared into the tangled landscape of the American road. For almost 40 years, it eluded the detection efforts of a growing community of Z fanatics. That all changed this past summer when the 1969 240Z number HLS30-00013 amazingly surfaced. Page 24
